Dissolved Oxygen Temperature and Biological Demand
What the evidence says
Dissolved oxygen changes continuously. Water gains oxygen through atmosphere-water exchange and photosynthesis, while respiration, decomposition and chemical reactions consume it. Warmer water holds less oxygen than colder water.
Why context matters
A single daytime surface reading can conceal the lowest-risk period. Open water and production systems should be checked at relevant depths and times, including before sunrise when biological demand may have reduced oxygen overnight.
Puroxi application
BOD describes oxygen consumed as microorganisms decompose material under defined test conditions. High organic loading can therefore reduce the oxygen available to aquatic organisms and biological treatment processes.
Site verification
- Record DO in mg/L and percent saturation where useful, with temperature, time, depth and location.
- Establish a pre-treatment baseline and repeat readings under comparable operating conditions.
- For aquaculture, interpret DO with species, biomass, feeding, pH, ammonia and nitrite.
- Size gas transfer and circulation around demand and required distribution, not water volume alone.
